Change the World One Way at a Time

The labour movement in B.C. has been involved with the United Way for at least sixty years and was present at the founding of many if not all United Ways in this province of ours. Known then as the Community Chest, many Labour leaders served on the boards of directors and participated actively in the campaigns to raise money. People's involvement stemmed from the need to create a better community for all residents of the Province and improve the lots of those most in need.

During these years, the Canadian Union of Public Employees involvement has been vital to the success of the United Way campaigns. By giving once throught the United Way's umbrella organization, many community service agencies can be supported. In addition, people can now also choose to support any registered Canadian Charity when they make a pledge through payroll deduction. This option returns to us our original aim to have one donation cover a multitude of worthwhile organizations.

Agencies currently supported by the United Way provide a variety of services that range from Meals on Wheels, Youth services, Hospice care, health and rehabilitation services like those provided by the CNIB and the Arthritis Society. Emergency services for people in crisis, alcohol abuse, mental health -- all lend a hand to thousands of our neighbours, friends and family members all across the Island.

The United Way also provides a Union Counseling Referral Program through the Labour departments in Vancouver and Victoria and these employee assistance programs allow people to help resolve fellow employees' problems in a confidential manner. Not only do the employees benefit, but so does the community as a whole.

The members of CUPE have been long-time supporters of the United Way and our communities. The amount of money raised by CUPE members has made it one of the cornerstones of our campaigns. Some examples are to be found in the municipalities, colleges, universities and extended care hospitals and numerous other workplaces where your proud Union holds certifications.

This spirit of community giving is in evidence in all CUPE workplaces and there are too many to name them all, nor could we begin to tell all of our success stories from across the Island.

It is important that you know the extent of your participation. Without your support and that of many others, this beautiful Island of ours would not be as nice a place to live in, for everyone.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or comments, (250) 385-6708. We would also like to publish stories about your involvement in your community, and would feature these in one of our semi-annual newsletters. Please call André or Joanne, or fax your submissions to (250) 385-6712.
